All About Strength with Matt

By The Sculpt Society

TSS trainer Matt Liotine shares his perspective on how strength fits into The Sculpt Society method, why it matters, and what to expect when you pick up those weights. From his favorite exercises to misconceptions about strength training, his insights highlight how this format can empower you in and out of class. Whether you're new to lifting or looking to level up, Matt’s answers offer a deeper look at how strength complements the sculpting, energizing movement you already love, and how it can help you feel more grounded, capable, and strong every step of the way.

How have you enjoyed incorporating strength into your TSS repertoire?

Matt: I have absolutely loved incorporating strength into my TSS repertoire! The TSS vibe is so fierce and strong already. There’s something about TSS that makes you feel like a total bad ass. When you incorporate lifting heavy weights, moving at a bit of a slower pace and changing up the format, you can’t go wrong.

Why is strength training important to you in your workout routine?

Matt: Strength training has always been important to me in my workout routine. There’s something about lifting heavy that really makes you feel strong and powerful. I find that when I do a standard TSS workout I feel light on my feet, and quick; I feel like I’m building endurance as an athlete. When I do strength training I feel grounded and sturdy. I feel like I’m building up my ability to apply force and grow.

How would you describe the TSS approach to strength? How is it different from Strength programs elsewhere?

Matt: The difference between the TSS approach to strength is that the vibe is totally there! You get that same feel good, party vibe that you can’t get anywhere else. It’s a vibe that makes you feel like you’re in this together and nothing can bring you down!

What’s your favorite strength move? One you love to hate?

Matt: I love rows! Any kind of row will do it for me, from a single arm row in a lunge to a renegade row in a plank! So challenging and such a good way to work both your back and your arms. There’s nothing like working on your arms!! A strength exercise that I could do without would be alternating reverse lunges while holding heavy dumbbells. SO CHALLENGING!

Can beginners take Strength at TSS? What do they need to know before starting?

Matt: Beginners can absolutely take Strength at TSS! We recommend starting with lighter weights if you’re a beginner so you can maximize your focus on the form of the exercise we’re doing. 5 pounds and under would suffice. All you need to know before starting is to stay present with your body, focus on the sensations we’re describing and remember to have fun!

What are some misconceptions about Strength training?

Matt: Some common misconceptions about Strength training is that it’s made only for men but there are so many studies saying otherwise. It’s so important for women, especially as they age, to maintain bone density and provide overall lubrication to the joints!

What’s your go-to song to get hyped before teaching?

Matt: My go-to album to get me HYPED for any occasion where I will be moving my body is Beyonce’s Renaissance. I will listen to that album from the top on my way to teaching, to dance class, to an audition, to a rehearsal and I will FEEL the power of the music.

What’s your favorite way to refuel after a strength class?

Matt: If I’m by the Sculpt Society studio I’ll grab a Mega Matcha at Juice Generation, but honestly my favorite way to refuel after a strength class is to sit down and have a nice big meal!

What’s your #1 strength class must have? (Think equipment, clothing, shoes, etc.)

Matt: My #1 strength class must have is absolutely a towel for my sweat! Strength classes (especially incorporating legs) make me sweat so much!
