Female Founders Series: Chriselle Lim, Founder of Phlur

By Megan Roup

I'm thrilled to share insights from a recent chat with my friend Chriselle Lim, a serial entrepreneur, OG creator, and the creative force behind Phlur, one of my absolute favorite brands. Not only is Chriselle a visionary in the beauty industry, but she's also a dedicated mom of two. Join us as we dive into her journey with Phlur and beyond.

This interview was pulled from our Sculpt + Spill conversation, which can be found on The Sculpt Society.

How did your journey with Phlur start?

Four years ago, I embarked on a venture that reshaped my professional path. Acquiring Phlur wasn't just about taking over an existing brand; it was about completely transforming it. This all happened during a very personal tumultuous time—going through a divorce and the chaos of a post-COVID world. The timing was far from perfect, which made the challenge even more significant.

What inspired the creation of the viral fragrance Missing Person'?

In a period of personal difficulty, lacking the creative spark I believed was essential, I discovered that inspiration often comes from unexpected places. My sense of isolation led to the creation of 'Missing Person'—a fragrance meant to evoke the essence of someone's presence. This fragrance was more than a product; it became a companion during my darkest times, leading to its viral success.

How has vulnerability helped Phlur connect with people?

Sharing my true self, the struggles and the victories, has proven that people connect deeply with authenticity. By using social media to share these personal stories, I didn't just reach out to our audience; I connected with them on a human level. This approach helped Phlur build a loyal community, turning personal connection into a powerful brand asset.

What have you learned from your non-linear career path?

The idea of a linear path to success, like landing on a Forbes list, seems less relevant now. I've learned that experiences, including failures, are not setbacks but stepping stones. They refine your methods and goals. Phlur is a tapestry of my past experiences—each failure and success woven into its story.

What entrepreneurial wisdom can you share?

One crucial lesson I've learned is the importance of acknowledging your weaknesses as much as your strengths. Early on in my ventures, I realized I didn't need to know everything. Building a team that complements my skills allows me to focus on what I do best and stay engaged creatively, which is vital for any leader.

What are your future plans for Phlur and how do you balance motherhood?

I'm excited about Phlur's future, particularly our upcoming 'Father Figure' deodorant launch. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship has taught me the value of structured flexibility. Co-parenting, though challenging, has allowed me to be fully present in both roles, organizing my life to be fully engaged whether I'm in mom mode or business mode.
